The aim of this study was to examine the way soils’ humic substances may influence the adsorption of various organic pollutants. We chose anthracene and phenanthrene, benzene and diuron as model-compounds. We investigated the amount adsorbed from these compounds on different types of soils and on humic substances extracted from them. From the results of our research it can be concluded that the inorganic constituents of soils play also an important role in the adsorption of apolar compounds. However, in the case of polar pollutants, the humic substances of soils play increasing role - up to dominant one – due to their polar functional groups. Desorption of polar pollutants may be more substantial than of the apolar compounds, due of the polar character of the soil solution. Therefore, although the binding of the latter one is weaker, the equilibrium will be reached at a lower adsorption rate in the case of polar compounds, due to the different rates of desorption processes.
