Abstract

The number of agricultural holdings in Hungary is steadily decreasing, which is also reflected in the decline in the number of people applying for aid and in the concentration of holdings. Small and medium-sized farms are being replaced by large and giant farms. Local farmers who have been forced out of land ownership and use have to look for other livelihoods. The process is leading to a shrinking of the rural economy through out-migration and job losses. A further problem is that, in many cases, EU direct and rural development funding has degraded agriculture as a source of subsidies as an investment opportunity. The change in the size of holdings in Hungary can be more realistically and illustratively measured on the basis of the published data of the Hungarian State Treasury, without the smallholder/holder/holder farmer data, which distort the published figures. By standardising the annual data, novel figures are presented to show the average size of resident farms and their concentration by district. The results provide an opportunity for novel findings and further investigation in an area (relations between companies and private individuals, family land ownership, use of land by different interests, etc.) that has not yet been studied.
