Abstract

In contemporary times, populism has found a prominent space within the global political stage. As an ideology, it seeks to gather wide support among the “ordinary people” and their problems, while placing these issues in opposition to that of an “elite” that is constructed to have an anti-people political dominance. The fundamental point of interest with populist politics is its ability to gather widespread political support with the aid of a rather simplified set of issues. This raises the question of how the interests of a varied sets of individuals converge over a specific political choice. Behavioural economics, a subfield of economics, which seeks to provide an alternative set of concepts and theories that offer a more realistic understanding of human choice behaviour can also help with this question.
