Abstract

We could follow the continuous growth of both the number and the area of protected lands from 1872. During the six years from 1934 until the beginning of the Second World War there were more than 400 protected natural area established while in the previous 20 years only 300 were created. We might think that because of the Second World War creation of the nature conservation areas has ceased in Europe and at least slowed down on other parts of the World but besides USA, Canada and Indonesia, European countries were among the leaders. Most of the areas were created in the German Republic, but 22 were created in Estonia, 11 in Sweden, 9 in Hungary and 6 in Romania, based on the database of the IUCN. All data in the article belong to nature conservation areas classified by the IUCN. This database does not contain all protected areas totally, e.g. more than 200 were designated in Hungary.
