Lakes on the Gömör-Torna karst – state of the past and present on the example of the Papverme Lake

Abstract

Karstic lakes belong to the natural values of karst. Some of these are very significant land elements, important as habitat as well as aesthetic attraction. Currently most of the lakes are strongly eutrophicated. Since anthropogenic influence made their natural processes much shorter, they vanish together with some protected species. Moreover they collect the pollutants and transfer them very fast to the underground water and to the caves, thus endangering the karst system. We monitored the quality of some lakes of the Gömör-Torna karst. Our aim was to get information about the effect of the land use on the changes in the state of the lakes through a monitoring of the water quality and estimating of the surroundings. Now we choosed the Papverme Lake (also: Farárová jama Lake) as an example to show the processes of nowadays. According to the operative hungarian standard we made a summarized water quality evaluation from the year 2008 and 2009. It reflect its surrounding and effect of the human activity quite well.
