Between 1994 and 1999 landscape character assessments have been prepared for all landscapes throughout Scotland. The article introduces this outstanding project, regarding the methodology applied, the contents of the studies and the results achieved. There are also various examples quoted to illustrate the practical applications of the assessments, describing whether and how they assist the protection of landscape character.
Key results of the programme include the significant recognition amongst landscape professionals, and the awareness raised of landscapes amongst the other partners involved (representatives of governmental bodies, local authority staff etc.). The outcomes of the programme have been applied in central government policy and advice, and are well-used in development planning and control at local authority level. The project therefore provided a strong platform from which to implement the European Landscape Convention.
