Abstract

Plants that develop, then decompose in the water, are adding to the lakes a natural load of nutrients, which are significantly important to be charted in the field of water quality protection. Therefore, we aimed to define the decomposition rate, using litter bag method, for Myriophyllum spicatum which is the most current seaweed in the area of Balaton. Decomposition rates were determined with the formula Mt = M0∙e-kt, where Mt is the remaining dry matters volume (g), M0 is the mass of the dry matter in the time of zero, k is the exponential degradation coefficient, and t is the elapsed time from the outplacement (day). We set the halflives or half-life with the help of TH = ln2∙k-1 coherency. In the period of the examination, the mean temperature and the precipitation totals were not different from the long-term climatic norms, that are typical in this area, respectively did not happen such unexpected, extreme weather events, that could influence our experiment’s outcome in any ways. Our results show, that the outplaced Myriophyllum spicatum in Lake Balaton belongs to the fast degradation category, and it’s half-life is really short.
