Abstract

The authors evaluated the udder parameters of primiparous Lacaune ewes (n = 64), as well as the relations between the examined udder properties and the milk production of the ewes, in a nucleus farm in Győr-Moson-Sopron County. The first third of lactation, during the evening milking, the ewes evaluated their udder properties on a 1-9 point scale (udder depth, fore udder attachment, udder shape, udder cleft, udder base attachment, udder symmetry, teat placement and teat length). The ewes were milked twice a day, in a 2 x 24 milking parlour. Their milk production and lactation period were determined based on their official milk recording by breeders’ association. The relationships between udder and milk production properties (lactation length and milk production) were calculated using multifactorial regression analysis. Based on the results of the multifactorial regression study, it can be concluded that udder depth, fore udder attachment, udder shape and udder symmetry had the most significant effect on the length of the ewes' lactation period and the amount of produced milk yield.
