Abstract

The phenomenon of globalization is increasingly internationalising higher education. Students can now easily find universities abroad and researchers and teachers are increasingly engaged in cross-border collaborations. The international rankings of higher education institutions are a guide for researchers and students alike, yet they also present a range of challenges. These challenges include language barriers.

This paper examines the language challenges in academia, with a particular focus on higher education institutions. The evidence demonstrates that language barriers impact not only individual performance but also impede academic collaboration and knowledge sharing. Furthermore, the paper examines the relationship between language skills and cultural competencies and their role in successful international research careers. The findings of the research indicate that in order to overcome language barriers, higher education institutions and the academic community need to work together to develop language skills, raise cultural awareness and promote multilingualism. The implementation of comprehensive support mechanisms can facilitate the success of all scientists in a globalized academic environment.
