Abstract

Marketplaces are fascinating to deal with. With the burgeoning number of shopping plazas and supermarkets that cater for every need, the true marketplace is now something of an anachronism. But the 'magic' that exists between producers and customers in a traditional market finds no place in the impersonal environment of a shopping mall. I believe it is very important to bolster these traditional centres of trade and to create an appropriate environment for them.

A good example is the Teleki Square market, which was originally planned as a marketplace and still functions as such today. Budapest’s 8th district, known as Józsefváros, is under continuous development. The revitalization of Teleki László Square and its surroundings is one of the district’s future development projects, and is long due. Since the renovation carried out in the 1950s, the condition of the square has seriously deteriorated. The potential energy of the place remains unutilized, although in terms of urban structure and transportation connections, it could be one of the most important squares in the heart of the 8th district
