Abstract

The continuous increase of the nature conservation areas lasted from 1872 until the beginning of World War II. During the world war the increase has stopped but the next era brought increase both in number and in area again. We continue the history of establishing nature conservation areas with the overview of the 5 years between 1951 and 1955. All data in the article belong to nature conservation areas classified by the IUCN. According to this database the most areas in number were established in the Federal Republic of Germany, half of them belonged to the landscape protection areas, half of them to nature reserves. Most of the areas belong to category IV (Habitat/Species Management Area: protected area managed mainly for conservation through management intervention) but there were 66 different national categories among the designated areas in this period. Sizes were among the average (between 10 000 and 100 000 ha). 16 of the Hungarian protected areas were included on the IUCN list, all of them belongs to the category of nature conservation area. We can state that compared to the previous five years the number of established protected areas grew again between 1951 and 1955 (from 580 to 791). In this period three sites have major importance, the Serengeti National Park with the protection of the biggest herds of wild animals in Africa, the Tikal National Park protecting the potential genetic center of the Maya civilization and the Victoria Falls National Park preserving the world famous Victoria Falls.
