A gazdasági haszonállatok nagy részénél nem okoz problémát a tenyészcélban megfogalmazott szelekciós tulajdonságok mérése. Ezzel szemben a lótenyésztésben igen problémás a különböző teljesítmények számszerű kifejezése. Különösen nehéz ez a lóverseny-sportokban (galopp és ügetőversenyek), ahol a versenyteljesítmény egzakt mérésén kívül a környezeti tényezők jelenetős hatásával is számolnunk kell. Magát a versenyteljesítményt több oldalról próbálták megközelíteni, kifejezni. Az esetek többségében viszonylag alacsony örökölhetőséggel bíró tulajdonságként definiálták, függetlenül attól, hogy a versenyben elért helyezések, a pénznyeremények, vagy a lefutási idő, így a sebesség tükrében fejezték ki azt. Irodalmi összefoglalónk első részében részletesen ismertetjük az eddig használt versenyteljesítményt kifejező tulajdonságokra vonatkoztatott, becsült genetikai paraméterek értékeit és összefüggéseit.
