How digital sensors help improve animal welfare – Presented via grazing beef cattle herd

In our study, we were looking for answers how animal welfare parameters of extensively kept beef cattle herd can be monitored and enhanced by using commercially available sensors based on digital data collection. Therefor, we equipped 120 Charolais cows and their offspring with various devices. The main aspect of selection was that the sensors should be located on different parts of the body and to provide various data. The collected information turns the invisible into visible, thus we can learn when and what is happening on the pasture. The sensors provide rumination, activity, body temperature and location data, from which we prepare daily reports for the farmers. Based on data, we can monitor the health status both on individual and herd levels. Due to the real-time data, quick and effective action is possible in case of any problem. By data collection, we are able to track oestrus/heating and forecast the time of calving after natural mating. In addition, calving complications can be effectively filtered out with camera monitoring, thereby reducing perinatal calf loss. Based on our experiences, sensor technologies help to improve animal welfare on the pasture, and with the information received, we can make the herd healthier and stress-free.
