Relationship between temperament of first lactation Jersey cows and daily milk production traits and somatic cell count

The authors evaluate the temperament of Jersey (n = 214) breeds in a dairy farm in Győr-Moson-Sopron County. The study aims to analyze the relationship between the temperament of cows and daily milk production indicators, as well as the somatic cell count. The animals were kept on loose housing stable with deep litter system and nutrition was silage-based monodiet. The cows milked in 2 × 12 SAC milking parlour, 2 times per day has occurred. The temperament of cows was scored by the temperament score test (behaviour of animals was assessed in a 5-score system (1: calm, 5: nervous) while spending 30 sec on the scale during weighing). Descriptive statistical characteristics of temperament score of the first lactation of Jersey cows were as follows: average 1.56 points, 1 point minimum and a maximum of 3 points, 1 point median. The somatic cell count of cows increased by increasing the temperament score, so it became less favorable (median value: 1 point: 112.05 thousand / ml, 2 points: 302.15 thousand / ml, 3 points: 506.60 thousand / ml) (Chi2: 91.66, df: 2, P = 0.0001, α = 0.05). The other trait was considered a function of temperament score did not change significantly. Between the somatic cell count and the temperament scores rank correlation coefficient (n = 214, rrank = 0.65, P <0.05) was confirms the importance of selection of temperament in breeding work.
