Abstract

In the study, an attempt is made to interpret the peculiarities of Jókai’s career, which can serve as an explanation as to why Mór Jókai can be the creator of the Hungarian comic book, or at least the forerunner of the discursive characteristics of the Hungarian comic book (that is, not the 19th-century antecedents of the Hungarian comic book culture of recent decades are revealed through the creation of a historical development narrative). The essay attempts to present literary historical contexts that can contribute to the interpretation of the genesis of the Hungarian comic through the interpretation of Jókai's career: the development of the livelihood editor's mode of operation; sequel fiction publication practice following the method of the portfolio novel; appreciation of the role of anecdotes in terms of national character; the illustrations/caricatures becoming primary and then sequential.
