Abstract

In France the fluvial channels built originally to serve industrial and economical purposes started to be converted for touristic aims from the eighties. Some of them used to be real masterpieces and technical artworks of water engineering of their age. The channels, these built structures of water engineering and architecture, have made significant landscape alterations in the neighboring landscape depending on the character of the region. The water-courses which once connected the cities and industrial centers with the sea nowadays give place to “green tourism" (for example the Southern-Channel - Canal du Midi, the channel connecting Nantes and Brest - Canal de Nantes á Brest).
