szerint a történeti kert örökségünk része, és mint ilyen, védelemre és megóvásra érdemes. Az írás a történeti kert fogalmának a műemlék-elmélettől a kultúrtáj kategóriájáig tartó evolúcióját is vizsgálja, valamint összegzi a legfontosabb dokumentumokat és kartákat, illetve különböző országok közelmúltbeli tapasztalatait. Az egyes országok és világrészek számtalan különféle örökségvédelmi és helyreállítási rendszerének és módszerének elemzése meghaladná e cikk kereteit, hiszen szerencsére a történeti kertek egyre nagyobb jelentőséget nyertek az utóbbi években, s mára a legtöbb ország örökségi listáján jelentős pozíciót foglalnak el. Ez azonban nem mindig volt így, a történeti kerteket kezdetben csak természeti és ökológiai értékeik alapján vették számításba, művészeti és kulturális értékeit azonban sokáig figyelmen kívül hagyták
