This paper contains the short Hungarian history of the spider mite and flat mite research. Currently, there are 19 flat mite and 37 spider mite species in the Hungarian fauna, but only some of them can be considered to be pests. Numerous invasive species and a few indigenous species from the latter mentioned two families have been observed in Hungary in the last years.
