About the Journal

Editorial guidelines

Mission statement
4D is the journal of the Institute of Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Garden Art at the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences, but it aims to be a colourful forum for all professionals and authors active in the field of landscape design, as well as for research on and conservation of historic gardens, urban and spatial planning, landscape planning, landscape protection and restoration, landscape management and maintenance. The journal publishes only peer-reviewed articles and scientific publications.

The journal specialises in
agricultural sciences, arts

Keywords
landscape architecture, garden art, landscape design, landscape protection, landscape planning, urban planning

Frequency of publication
The journal is published in three regular issues and one special issue per year. The latter contains abstracts of currently defended master’s theses in Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, and occasionally bachelor’s theses of outstanding quality. Sometimes, the journal also publishes additional special issues and thematic issues.

The language of the journal
Hungarian and English
The 4D journal publications are generally published in full in both English and Hungarian. In the case of foreign authors, the full article is published in English only, with a Hungarian abstract.

Reviewing
Articles for the journal undergo a double-blind peer-review process. Submitted manuscripts will be evaluated by two peer reviewers in an anonymous review process.
The editorial team will maintain a database of the peer-reviewers it employs, including their names, contact details, current workplace, position and academic degree. The editors will provide the opportunity for prospective authors to find out about the journal’s peer-reviewers before submitting their article.

Declaration of conflict of interest
The Editorial Board is committed to double-blind peer review and to the absence of conflict of interest between author and reviewer in the editing and reviewing of manuscripts submitted by its own editorial board member or by a reviewer of the journal as author or co-author. If the authors of a manuscript include a member of the editorial board, the editor of the current issue of the journal or the journal director, the person concerned will not participate in the editing of the article, and the editorial tasks will be taken over by the other two, so blind peer-review is ensured in this case as well.

In addition, the author(s) of the manuscript and the reviewers of the manuscript must not be employees of the same institution (department).

When submitting their article, authors must declare that they have no financial or personal interest or relationship, i.e. no conflict of interest that might affect the results or interpretation of the research.

Plagiarism check
As of January 2022, the editorial team of 4D journal subjects submitted manuscripts to a plagiarism check. The check is carried out using the Turnitin text-matching service provided by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, via the university Moodle system. Stakeholders (authors, reviewers) can also find out the results of the check via Moodle. If the similarity index is significant, the manuscript will be returned to the authors for correction.

Lead time for the publication of articles
1–6 months after submission of the manuscript. If the manuscript does not comply with the journal's guidelines in form or content, or cannot be published as a result of a plagiarism check, the editorial office will notify the author within 2–4 weeks.

Financial conditions
The publisher does not charge a fee for the evaluation of submitted manuscripts or for their publication in the event of acceptance. The journal will provide immediate open access to the content and will allow free and legal re-use of scientific results without financial or legal restrictions.

Revenue and marketing
Sources of income
The 4D journal is fully funded by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences as publisher.

Advertising and direct marketing
The 4D journal does not publish advertisements. It publishes its content on the OJS platform hosted by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, with open access to the full text of articles. No other direct marketing methods are used by the editors to advertise the contents of the journal or to publicise the call for papers.

Right of open access and copyright
The journal is Open Access (Gold). It is licensed under the Creative Commons 4.0 standard licence CC-BY-NC-ND-4.0, which means that the work may be freely copied, distributed, displayed and presented, but may not be used for commercial purposes (NC), nor may it be modified or made into a derivative work (ND). The licence requires that the name of the author and the title of the work are displayed as defined by the author or the copyright holder (BY).

Authors declare, both when submitting their manuscript and before publication, that if the images or figures in their publication appeared previously on other platforms, journals or websites, they have the appropriate permission from the copyright owner to republish them.

Authors are entitled to publish the manuscript of their articles according to the following rules
The journal grants authors permission, without time limit and free of charge, to publish (by e-mail, on the author’s own or his/her institution’s website, on the limited or unrestricted access repository of the author's institution or university, or on other non-profit servers) pre-print but not final versions of their manuscripts accepted by the editorial board, perhaps including also the corrections of a reviewer. When authors distribute their work in this way, they must warn readers that the manuscript in question is not the final published version of the work. If the final version of the article has already been published in print or online, the author is encouraged and permitted to use that version. In this case, the exact date and place of publication in the journal and the DOI identifier of the article must be provided.
The author retains the copyright to the publication, but in the case of republication, the bibliographic details of the first publication of the article must be included.

Research data management guidelines
The editorial board of the journal encourages researchers to manage the research data and texts that form the basis of their publications in a manner that best complies with FAIR data management principles, thereby enhancing transparent, reproducible, ethical research practices.

Data mining policy
The journal’s publisher wishes to help published authors by increasing the scientific visibility of their articles and is therefore committed to reducing barriers to content mining. It actively engages with researchers to facilitate text and data mining by providing access to web robots on its own publishing platform and by continuously developing and updating its publishing platform and services.
In compliance with the I4OC standard, the source references of 4D articles are visible on the website, in particular the available Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).

Privacy statement
The names and e-mail addresses provided to the editorial team are exclusively for internal use, and will be used only for the purposes specified by the user and will not be disclosed to third parties.

Indexing and archiving the journal
The journal is indexed by the international ROAD database and its articles are indexed by CrossRef and Google Scholar. They are also processed by EPA, Matarka and MTMT. Articles are uploaded to MTMT by the publisher’s staff.
For long-term archiving of articles, the REAL repository was used until 2025. In the future, the long-term storage of the articles will be ensured by MATER Press, the repository of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
