The temporary utilization of the Nyugati Grund

Abstract

"The isolated parks on the edges of the inner area must be integrated into the system of greeneries by freeing up the brown fields of the transitional areas." Budapest is rich in brown fields and in most cases these are railway areas. The revitalisation of these under-utilized areas has key significance in urban planning: the spot-like areas may be well developed for investments, while the linear elements are important in creating and strengthening the urban green network. The main focus of my thesis falls on a spot-like railway area that can be at the same time the starting point for a new green linear element connecting into the urban green system. My thesis is on temporary utilization, in particular the temporary utilization of the unused property of Nyugati Railway Station (Fig. 1). The Nyugati Grund is an approximately 2ha area (Fig. 2) between the Nyugati Railway Station and the Ferdinand Bridge. The area was part of the Nyugati Railway Station until 2007. Since then it is partly owned by the Magyar Állami Vasutak Zrt (Hungarian State Railways Ltd) and the Magyar Nemzeti Vagyonkezelő Zrt (Hungarian National Asset Management Ltd). Since the development plans of the Governmental District have been concealed, the abandoned area is lying unused although it is the largest spatial resource of downtown Budapest.
