Abstract

Although the invasive fruit pest, spotted wing drosophila (SWD - Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931)), has been present in Hungary for nearly ten years, its overwintering strategy hasn’t been fully understood yet. We investigated the role of the surrounding habitats of warm watercourses as shelters for the overwintering SWD imagoes. We conducted a trapping survey along two warm creeks (Tapolca and Hévíz) from March to October of 2021, at 18 locations. In contrast with the general phenological pattern of the pest, observed previously in other habitats in Hungary, we were able to catch SWD imagoes in the spring and early summer months of the experiment. The winter morphs of SWD in the traps in spring showed that the overwintering was successful in these locations. The number of SWD-s in the traps has shown a negative correlation with the distance from the warmest point of the creeks. Our results confirm that thermal creeks may contribute to the overwintering of SWD populations in Hungary.
