Boer goats have gained worldwide recognition for excellent body conformation, fast growing rate, good adaptation ability, great prolificacy and good meat production ability.
The word Boer translates to English as „farmer”. The Boer is an improved goat which is bred primarily for meat. Its popularity as a meat goat breed soared during the last years over the world.
The history, origin and characteristics of the South African Boer breed of goats are reviewed. The development was carried out by a handful of farmers in the Eastern Cape, particularly in the district of Somerset East. The prototype for the breed was selected from several existing breeds of goats in South Africa in order to achieve the present functional characteristics and type. The Boer goat is a hardy breed with great capacity for adaptation and an exceptional ability to withstand and resist diseases. The South African Boer Goat Breeders’ Association was founded in 1959 to establish standards for the emerging breed. Since 1970 the Boer goat has been incorporated into the National Mutton Sheep and Goat Performance testing scheme, which makes the Boer goat the only known goat breed involved in a performance test for meat production.
Numerous countries had imported Boer goats from South Africa including USA, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Israel, France and more recently China.
Since 1999 The Hungarian Alpine and Saanen Goat Breeders’ Association has been registration this breed.
