Preliminary data on claw horn toughness of Holstein Friesian and Hungarian Fleckvieh cattle kept under same conditions
Keywords:

The foot structure is closely related to the claw horn quality, especially with toughness. Therefore, in this study the claw horn hardness of Holstein Friesian and Hungarian Fleckvieh cattle (n = 14, age: x = 1034 day, SE = 263.7 day, weight: x = 565.5 kg, SE = 16.86 kg) was investigated. Measurements were taken with Shore D hardness durometer, on three places (A, B, C) of claw horn. The average claw horn hardness of animals was 66.61 Shore D with 0.76 average error. The results showed that breed (HF, Shore D = 66.58, HS, Shore D = 66.63, Wald Chi2: 0.001, P = 0.971) and sex (cow, Shore D = 67.97, bull, Shore D = 65.24, Wald Chi2: 1.203, P = 0.273) have not, but the place of measurements (Wald Chi2: 12.11, df:2, P = 0.002, α < 0.05) and age (Wald Chi2: 10.16, df:1, P = 0.001, α < 0.05) have a significant effect on claw toughness.
