A fás szárú élő növénygyűjteményeket különböző elnevezésekkel illetik. A kifejezések egy részére pontos megfogalmazások találhatók a különféle szakirodalmakban, azonban eddig nem született olyan átfogó tanulmány, amely a 19. századi gyűjteményes kertekkel kapcsolatos fogalmakat külön-külön és egymáshoz képest tájépítészeti szempontból vizsgálná.
