Proper storage of apples in terms of maintaining quality is crucial for both consumers and for the efficiency of the food industry. This research explores Apple storing methods and possibilities, primarily focusing on different storage conditions from the customers' perspective. The aim is to examine the effect of various storage conditions on the physical and chemical properties of apples in detail, and their shelf life, with particular attention to the differences between commercial and home storage.
We bought Golden Delicious apples commercially and stored them at two temperatures (+5°C and +10°C), simulating consumer behaviour, at the Fruit Growing Department of the Buda Campus of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Sustainable food production and consumption are increasingly important in our everyday lives. Exploring appropriate storage methods reduces food waste and promotes more sustainable food consumption. If consumers can store apples properly at home, less fruit goes to waste.
In addition to increasing greenhouse gas emissions, food waste from food degradation also means wasting resources used in production and transport. Exploring appropriate home storage methods will not only help preserve the quality of apples and reduce energy consumption, but also reduce food waste.
