Waste Management in Military Camps

Abstract

In our study, we assessed the maintenance materials discharged during the operation and logistical servicing of military camps in order to determine the environmental impact index of the facility and to control the waste management activities of the camp.

The characteristics of municipal waste and the potential for waste management, in particular as a tertiary biomass, were studied. It was necessary to know the characteristics of military camps from the military application aspect.

As a result of the study, the waste measurable on the output side of the material transport by branch of 4 HVB operation and supply systems was determined. Special attention was paid to the municipal services measured during the investigation of the facility operational tasks, the data of 1406 m3/month of wastewater generated and 225 m3/month of solid waste generated. After evaluation of the results, a waste management plan was proposed.

According to the data measured at the material transport output, the possibility of on-site waste disposal was assessed. We highlight that a reduction of more than 75% of the total amount of waste to be disposed of from the facility is achievable. Furthermore, by assessing the composition of the waste, it can be shown that through a conscious procurement of materials, the amount of waste to be removed from the facilities can be reduced by up to 95%, which would proportionally reduce the risk of a terrorist attack on the camp by 95% in the operational area.
