Climate Change and Grain Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor L.) Cultivation in Hngary
A Review
Keywords:
grain sorghum, climate change, corn, water shortage, adaptabilityAbstract
Global climate change may restructure the characteristics of some agricultural areas, in consequence of which, the production of conventional arable crops may become more difficult. In the affected areas, it can be forward-looking to grow plants, for which the changed climate – where conventional crops can no longer be grown economically – is also favorable. Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) can be a good alternative to corn in areas affected by drought. In this literature review, the expected effects of climate change, as well as their appearence in Hungarian corn production are explained. In addition to the origin of sorghum and its requirements, we can also get an overview about its morphological and physiological properties, with the help of which it can withstand the negative effects of climate change. The main aim of the article is to draw attention to the new opportunities, inherent in areas, that have become drier due to climate change, furthermor to the necessity of reforming the agronomic structure.
