Investigation of behaviour and reproduction ability in horned and polled Charolais sire candidates
Keywords:
horned, polled, Charolais bulls, temperament, scrotum circumferenceAbstract
Authors’ aim was to evaluate the difference between temperament and reproduction capacity of horned and polled Charolais bulls. Furthermore, they investigated the correlation between the 2 mentioned traits in the 2 varieties of breed. Examinations were carried out in 2004 in a Hungarian herd with horned and polled Charolais sire candidates with similar mean age and live weight. The animals were kept in small groups, on deep litter shed and fed on silage, hay and fodder. To evaluate temperament they applied the scale test. Capacity of reproduction was characterised by scrotum circumference measured at the widest part of scrotum. Statistical analyses did not show significant difference between horned and polled bulls in either temperament or scrotum circumference. Significant correlation was not confirmed between temperament and scrotum circumference, in any of the groups, but they observed negative, medium correlation between live weight and temperament in case of polled individuals.
