Abstract

Apropos of a Female Author. Women’s Self-Sufficiency Strategies Against the Subsistence Crisis of the Hungarian Gentry Middle Class at the Turn of 19th and 20th Century.

In Hungary the first few decades of the 20th century were a period of great importance for the emancipation of women. Whereas women in general had more and more opportunities to work, their social status greatly affected the freedom they could enjoy in different spheres of social life. Based on the autobiography of renowned female author Júlia M. Hrabovszky, the paper analyses the way women of conservative gentle middle class origin could create a financial background that gave them security.
