Brian O’Nolan: regényíró vagy újságíró?

Myles na gCopaleen, azaz Brian O’Nolan az 1940-es évektől 1966-os haláláig az Irish Times rovatvezetőjeként óriási hatással volt a korabeli Dublinban az olvasók egy bizonyos válogatott rétegére. Őt tartották a legviccesebb és legveszélyesebb szatirikusnak, akit Írország valaha is látott, és kifejezetten féltek tőle azok, akik úgy érezték, hogy célkeresztjébe kerülhetnek. Sokan azt hitték róla, ez az egyetlen, amivel foglalkozik, és amikor 1960-ban újra felbukkant 1939-ben írt regénye, villámgyorsan James Joyce törvénytelen utódja lett belőle, akár akarta, akár nem. Maradt utána három jó könyv, amiről könyvtárakat írtak össze a „high brow” koponyák. És maradt huszonhat évnyi elhanyagolt újságcikk, főleg a Cruiskeen Lawn című szatirikus rovatban, az Egyszerű Ír Nép fricskázására, szórakoztatására, nevelésére. Ezek közül melyik érdemli meg a „fő mű” rangot? Lehet-e, hogy egy kanonizált posztmodern regényíró zseni mégis komoly értéket teremtett egy frivolnak bélyegzett „Teli Korsócskával?”
