2019 (51) Special Issue: Diploma Thesis 2019
This year marks an important anniversary for the Faculty of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism, the founder and publisher of the 4D journal, again. On the basis of the School of Horticulture, the Academy of Horticulture was established in 1939, related closely to the József Nádor University of Technology and Economics regarding the educational organisation. The integration into a university opened the opportunity for the establishment of the most significant professional units, including the Department of Garden Art and Garden Design founded by Imre Ormos. This institutional development of 70 years ago laid the basis for an independent progress and institutionalisation of the profession.
As demonstrated by his substantial publications and lecture books, writing professional and scientific publications was integral part of Ormos's work done in the fields of education, planning, design and professional consultancy. Imre Ormos, the school founder, set a good example with this, too.
The past 70 years have brought great progress for the profession, the landscape school and also for the professional publication. The 2006 launch of 4D, the independent scientific periodical of the profession, provided and still provides a good opportunity for publishing research and project results of both the narrow and the wider profession. Since ten years now, the journal is published in Hungarian and English, thus supporting also international professional networking. The growing number of international publications is a significant achievement of the past years. The education at the Faculty is also international since, in addition to the Hungarian language landscape architecture and urban systems engineering programmes, the international Master in Landscape Architecture is a substantial and sought after programme.
The 4D journal aimed at providing scope for the publication of the best thesis projects since the beginning, regarding both research oriented or landscape planning works and landscape design projects. Publication of the thesis projects in a single book was also urged by the students, so much that the first thesis booklet of the Faculty was edited by the actual graduates. The 4D has not only took care of this, but through the bilingual publication has also opened new dimensions for the fresh graduates. On behalf of the editorial board of the 4D journal, let me wish the young landscape architects and urban engineers a professionally challenging and successful career. And let me also encourage the colleagues to become regular readers of the journal, and contribute to the written content with project introductions, studies and scientific publications.
