Abstract

The urban planners and designers have been interested in the creation of the North-South Axis of the Central area of Pest for over a hundred years: the "Axis of the City" was well considered already in 1897 while shaping Szabadság square. It was not until 2006 - after 100 years - that the competition called "The Heart of Budapest" brought a breakthrough, i.e. the new role and the management strategy of the Central area was welcomed by the professionals.
