Writing and Reading Performance of People with Down ’s Syndrome Grown up in Families in the Southern Transdanubian Region
Abstract
We have conducted a survey including 95 people with DS, grown up in their families in the Southern Transdanubian region. On the basis of the study it can be stated that the educational level of both the mother and the father has a significant influence on the improvement of the writing and reading skills of the person with DS. The reading skills of the person with DS influence the forming of their friendships. The great individual differences among people with DS draw attention to differences in education within the families. With longer learning time the person with DS may be able to learn to read and write at the same level as their healthy peers. These skills provide autonomy for the individual: therefore improve their quality of life.
A low level of parental qualification implies an environment poor in stimuli. Its compensation requires a more intensive family support.
