Abstract

Small mammals are the base for most of the natural communities in Hungary. Their species richness and population density are excellent indicators of the habitat diversity. Most of the previous publications in Hungary are about faunistic and population dynamics and they focus on South Hungary. Our study area therefore was designated at the northern part of the Hungarian Great Plain. The aims of our study were to explore the small mammal fauna of extensively handled forested habitats, and to investigate the habitat use of these species according to vegetation coverage. The captured small mammals were marked in a uniform manner and then they were released. Since the survey was carried out in July our results show lower species richness and population density than expected. Of the small mammal species only the presence of the yellow-necked wood mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) could be detected. With regard to the area distribution of the captures this species was more frequent in rich shrub and herbaceous patches than in those covered with thin vegetation. As a result it can be assumed that the degree of vegetation cover influences the habitat use of yellow-necked wood mouse.
